Most people put a lot of thought into choosing the right shed, then very little thought into what goes beneath their feet once it’s up. That’s understandable. Floor insulation isn’t exactly the exciting part of the process. But if you’re using your shed for anything beyond purely seasonal storage, it’s one of the most practical investments you can make.
A cold, damp floor creates problems that ripple upwards. Moisture rises through an uninsulated floor and into the air inside the shed, which leads to condensation on tools, rust on metal surfaces, and a damp smell that never quite goes away. Insulate the floor properly and you solve a good deal of that at source.

Why Insulating Your Shed Floor Matters
Ground temperature in the UK stays relatively cool throughout the year, even in summer. An uninsulated shed floor sits directly on or very close to that cold ground, and the temperature difference between the ground and the air inside the shed is what drives condensation.
For a basic garden storage shed, this might not matter much. But for a workshop, hobby space, or anything you’re heating in winter, an uninsulated floor is constantly working against you. You’re losing warmth through the floor, and the cold surface is encouraging moisture to gather wherever it can.
Insulating the floor also makes a genuine difference to comfort. A cold floor is noticeable within minutes of standing on it, regardless of how warm the rest of the space is. If you’re spending real time in your shed, this is worth addressing.
Understanding Joist Centres and Floor Construction
Before you choose an insulation type, it helps to understand how a typical shed floor is built. Most timber shed floors are constructed with joists running across the base frame, with boards or sheets laid on top. The joists create a series of bays between them, and the space within those bays is where insulation typically sits.
Joist centres refer to the measurement from the centre of one joist to the centre of the next. Common spacings in shed construction are 400mm and 600mm centres, though this varies by manufacturer. This measurement matters because rigid and semi-rigid insulation boards need to be cut to fit snugly between the joists, and buying the wrong size or cut leads to gaps where cold air and moisture can bypass the insulation entirely.
If you’re insulating a new shed before the floor boards go down, check the joist spacing before buying materials. If you’re retrofitting insulation to an existing floor, you’ll need to lift the boards to access the joist bays, which is more involved but entirely achievable with basic tools.
The Three Main Types of Shed Floor Insulation
Rigid Insulation Boards
Rigid insulation boards, typically made from PIR (polyisocyanurate) foam or XPS (extruded polystyrene), are the most popular choice for shed floors and for good reason. They offer high thermal performance relative to their thickness, which matters when you have limited depth between the floor surface and the ground.
PIR boards such as Celotex or Kingspan are widely available and give excellent results in tight joist bays. XPS boards are slightly less thermally efficient but very resistant to moisture and compression, making them a solid choice for floors that will take heavy loads.
Key points for rigid insulation:
- Cut boards to fit snugly between joists, with no visible gaps at the edges
- A sharp utility knife or handsaw is sufficient for cutting most rigid boards to size
- PIR boards should sit below the top of the joist, leaving space for a vapour control layer if required
- Use two thinner layers offset against each other if you need greater depth, as this eliminates cold bridging at the joints
Foil Insulation
Foil insulation, sometimes sold as multi-foil or reflective insulation, works differently from rigid or fibre products. Rather than trapping air in a solid medium, it reflects radiant heat back into the space using layers of metallised film. It’s very thin, which makes it attractive where depth is genuinely limited.
In practice, foil insulation performs best when it has an air gap on at least one side, which allows the reflective surface to do its job. Used correctly in a floor construction, it can be effective, but it’s worth being realistic: foil insulation on its own will rarely match the thermal performance of a well-fitted rigid board of equivalent or greater depth.
Where foil insulation comes into its own is as a vapour control layer used alongside rigid boards, or in very shallow floor constructions where there isn’t enough depth for anything else. It’s also easy to handle and cut, which makes it a practical option for retrofitting around awkward joist configurations.
Key points for foil insulation:
- Best used with an air gap on the warm side for maximum reflective benefit
- Tape all joins carefully with foil tape to maintain a continuous barrier
- Consider combining with a rigid board layer for better overall thermal performance
Fibre Insulation (Mineral Wool and Glass Wool)
Mineral wool and glass wool are familiar from domestic loft and wall insulation, and they work on the same principle in a shed floor: millions of tiny fibres trap air and slow the transfer of heat. They’re flexible, widely available, and relatively inexpensive.
The main limitation in a shed floor context is moisture. Fibre insulation absorbs water if it gets wet, and once saturated it loses its thermal effectiveness and can stay damp for a long time, potentially encouraging rot in the surrounding timber. For this reason, fibre insulation in a shed floor must always be paired with a proper vapour control layer on the warm side and good protection from below.
Key points for fibre insulation:
- Cut batts slightly wider than the joist bay so they compress slightly and hold themselves in place
- Always use a vapour control layer above the insulation and a breathable membrane or solid barrier below
- Wear gloves and a dust mask when cutting and fitting, as the fibres are an irritant
- Not recommended for sheds with a history of rising damp or poor drainage beneath the floor
Vapour Control: The Step Most People Skip
Insulation slows the movement of heat. Vapour control manages the movement of moisture, and in a shed floor the two need to work together.
When warm, moist air inside the shed meets the cooler surfaces of the floor construction, it can condense into liquid water within the insulation layer itself. Over time this leads to damp insulation, damp timber joists, and the beginnings of rot. A vapour control layer, typically a polythene sheet or specialist membrane, placed on the warm side of the insulation (that is, above it, between the insulation and the floor boards) stops moisture-laden air from passing through.
For most shed applications, a 500-gauge polythene sheet overlapped by at least 150mm at the joints and taped with foil or vapour barrier tape is sufficient. If you’re using rigid PIR boards that fit tightly with taped joints, the boards themselves provide reasonable vapour resistance, though adding a polythene layer above costs very little and adds meaningful protection.
What to remember:
- Vapour control goes on the warm side of the insulation, above it in a floor
- Lap joints by at least 150mm and tape them fully, as any gap undermines the whole layer
- Don’t confuse vapour control with a breathable membrane, which does the opposite job and belongs below the insulation, facing the ground
Comparing the Options: Which Is Right for Your Shed?
There’s no single correct answer, but the following should help you narrow it down:
If you want the best thermal performance and have enough depth in the joist bay, rigid PIR boards are the strongest choice. Fit them tightly, tape the joints, and add a polythene vapour control layer above.
If your floor has very limited depth or you’re retrofitting insulation into an awkward space, a multi-foil product is easier to work with and will provide a meaningful improvement over nothing.
If cost is the primary consideration and the floor is well-protected from moisture, mineral wool batts with a proper vapour control layer are an effective and economical option.
If you’re building a workshop or studio shed that you’ll be heating regularly, it’s worth combining a rigid board layer with a full vapour control membrane for the most robust result. Practical Tips Before You Start
- Measure your joist centres before buying anything. A board cut to 400mm centres won’t fit a 600mm bay, and waste adds up quickly.
- Check for any existing moisture issues under the shed before insulating. Insulating over a damp problem traps it rather than solving it.

- New shed builds are the easiest time to insulate the floor, before the boards go down. Retrofitting is entirely possible but does require lifting existing boards.
- Don’t overlook the perimeter. Cold bridging around the edges of a joist frame can undermine a well-insulated centre, so cut insulation to fill the full width of each bay right to the rim joists.
